Giovanni Maria Versace, known as Gianni Versace, born December 2, 1946 in Reggio Calabria, Italian fashion designer and founder of the Versace brand, internationally recognized for his clothing and cosmetics designs. Naomi Campbell, Elton John and Madonna were his close friends. He was one of the first designers to link the world of fashion to the world of music.
On July 15, 1997, Gianni Versace went out of his home to have a breakfast on the street’s coffee terrace, bought an Italian newspaper and the latest issue of Vogue magazine, walked close to a ready-to-wear shop that was selling his creations and then returned home. As he puts the key in the lock of the Casa Casuarina gate, a man shoots him two bullets in the head at close range, one in the left cheek, the other lodged behind the right ear. At the height of fame and artistic success, Gianni Versace was assassinated at the age of 50 years old. In the days following the drama, fingerprints reveal the identity of her killer, American serial killer Andrew Cunanan. Surrounded by the police, he committed suicide without explaining the murder of the stylist he did not know personally.
His sister Donatella Versace, who supported him for many years, took up the torch as designer-stylist of the family fashion business “Gianni Versace” and his brother Santo Versace is still its CEO.
He was openly homosexual. From 1982 until his death, he was in a relationship with the Italian model and stylist Antonio Damico.
